Goodreads Description

After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin. Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king's council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she'll serve the kingdom for four years and then be granted her freedom. Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilirating. But she's bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her... but it's the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best. Then one of the other contestants turns up dead... quickly followed by another. Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.

Holy Lord, Sarah J Maas must be a goddess of words because Throne of Glass is my bible. Throne of Glass is definitely one of my favorite books, in fact, this book planted the seed for my addiction to high fantasy books. Throne of Glass is filled with action and magic that truly blew my mind. There is romance too, and it is amazing. Let's just say that Sarah can really write up a man! One of my favorite aspects of Throne of Glass was it's main character for sure, Celaena Sardothien is such a well rounded character with a sharp witted tongue and a vain personality at the same time. Following that, Celaena is so badass, it's crazy. Celaena for me was such an amazing hero to look up to which sounds slightly ridiculous but I just love her so much.
When you read the description to Throne of Glass, in my personal opinion it's kind of a turn down because it sounds almost a little boring. Celaena is an assassin in a competition. I'm not sure if you've noticed, but when Throne of Glass came out, a YA book with a competition in it was the thing to do (i.e Divergent and The Hunger Games). But I want to tell you that though Throne of Glass does have a competition. In fact, the entire first book is mainly a competition, but it's important to know that when progressing into the second book the story gets a whole lot deeper. I found that in Throne of Glass, Celaena was trying to be free, she had a lot of secrets that she held dear but couldn't afford to reveal them. But what I really liked is that by the second and third books, Celaena grows, her character develops tremendously and Sarah J Maas achieved this flawlessly!
This book is completely high fantasy, in my opinion you can't get any more high fantasy than Throne of Glass did. Throne of Glass has magic, assassins (heck the main character is one), evil kings, charming princes, and a captain of the guard that sweats through his shirt. How can you go wrong? The plot of Throne of Glass captured me throughout the entire book with it's action, without the feeling of being constantly hit in the face with action over and over again to the point of it being too much. The plot has the perfect balance of romance, action and friendship in it that just completes the story.
Throne of Glass is definitely not the newest book out there, but it is not lost. The fan base it has today is completely incredible. So if you haven't picked up Throne of Glass yet, I completely urge you to do so! You won't be disappointed.
